Life Legacy
Gilbert Maywood Fitzgerald, 84, of Waynesboro, died Sunday evening, January 24, 2010 at Avante of Waynesboro.
Born October 18, 1925, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Clinton M. and Florence (Vest) Fitzgerald.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rossie Langley and three brothers, Arthur, James and Guy Fitzgerald.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, in the 106th Division, during World War II. He saw active duty in the Ardennes and Rhineland, receiving a Purple Heart for battle related injuries. He also earned a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Badge and four Battle Star Badges. Mr. Fitzgerald retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a member of Mt. Ed Baptist Church, Batesville.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Johnson) Fitzgerald; three daughters, Ruth F. Pannell and her husband Kenneth of Waynesboro, Rebecca F. Repass and her husband Robert of Norfolk and Barbara F. Woolard of Bumpass, VA; four grandchildren, Rev. Amy Pannell, Jennifer Repass, David Repass and Robin Hughes; two brothers, Harvey Fitzgerald and Morris Puckett, both of Waynesboro and two sisters, Evelyn Milstead of Waynesboro and Elizabeth Craig of Fishersville. He is also survived by three step daughters, Brenda Price, Lois Demelis and Doreen Holloway and two step sons, Alfred Glenn Loucks and Michael Ray Loucks, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday January 27, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in Riverview Cemetery, with Rev. Ronald Nickels, officiating. In keeping with Mr. Fitzgerald’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Ed Baptist Church, C/O Judy Smith, P.O. Box 88, Batesville, VA 22924.
