Biography

Pat Layman Coffey, Sr., of Waynesboro, passed away January 28, 2010 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Nelson County on March 4, 1927 to the late Benton H. and Susie D. Coffey. Pat was an Army veteran of WWII serving in Germany. He retired in 1988 from Smiths Transfer as a truck driver with 33 years of service. He also retired from Augusta Co-op Farm Bureau. Pat was a member of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed farming and gardening whether it was at his home place in Nelson County or planting tomato plants in his flowerbeds.
His wife Nellie Inez Moyer Coffey, who he married July 30, 1949, preceded him in death. They shared 44 years of marriage before her passing.
Pat was also preceded in death by his daughter Debra Coffey Julian on January 7, 2010; sisters, Elsie “Boots” Truslow, Nellie “Sis” Coffey and Peggy Perry, as well as a nephew James “Bumpy” Coffey.
He is survived by daughters Romonda Allen of Stuarts Draft, Patsy and John Glass of Waynesboro, Denice and Ricky Morris of Stuarts Draft, a son Pat and Joan Coffey, Jr. of Stuarts Draft, a brother, Paul Coffey and his wife Kathy of Afton. A special niece Marie Napier and her husband Norman, nephew Joe Coffey and his wife Faye, also survives him.
He is survived by 12 grandchildren. Paw Paw and Nanny raised as their own Jessica Coffey, who resided with him and Joshua Coffey. Sandra and Jonathan Riley, Robert and Shannon Allen, Elizabeth Glass, Alana Sackett and Jammy Butler, Stuart and Heather Allen, Leigh Anne and Brian Childress, Melissa Coffey and Brandon Seitter, Katelyn, Gwendolyn and Joseph Coffey. Nine great grandchildren, Blake Childress, Peyton, Savannah and Piper Allen, Jacob, Kennedy and Ian Coffey and their mother Kim Wood. Benjamin Riley, Makayla Seitter. He was also a special Paw Paw to Nick and Brian Coffey.
Active Pallbearers will be Robert and Stuart Allen, Ricky Morris, Harold Wayne Napier, Bo Dodd, David Dodd, Joe Coffey and Bobby Donaldson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donald Sims, Brian Coffey and Brian Childress.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday February 1, 2010 at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, 901 Shenandoah Avenue, Waynesboro, with Rev. Dr. Paul LaPrevotte, officiating. Interment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday January 31, 2010 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street, and at other times at his home.
