Biography

Oliver Zell Hoge, Jr., of Lexington and Andernos-les-Bains, France, died Friday, January 29, 2010, at his home in France.
He was born May 27, 1923, in Staunton, the son of Oliver Zell and Stella Hanson Hoge.
He grew up in Staunton and graduated from Staunton Military Academy and the University of Virginia.
He is survived by his son, Geoffrey Etienne and his wife Catherine, and granddaughter Barbara Virginie, of Bordeaux, France, step-daughter, Dominique Coit, of Donegal, Ireland, and his sister, Katharine Hoge Smith, of Staunton.
He was predeceased by his brother, Benjamin Hanson Hoge.
He enlisted in the Army Infantry in WWII and served in the Office of Strategic Services. He was a veteran of the Normandy campaign, and entered Paris in the first convoy of the liberating army, under the command of the French General Leclerc. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and worked with the British 12th Army Group in Intelligence while in the OSS. Following WWII, he taught German at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland. He was passionate about travelling, and visited almost 100 countries. He was a member of R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church in Lexington.
A funeral service will be conducted, Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11:30 A.M. at the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 18 West Frederick Street, by the Rev. David Cox.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, 123 W. Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450.
