Life Legacy

Anne P. H. Ayres, 98, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010, at her home at Baldwin Park in Staunton, Virginia, and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Mrs. Ayres was born on October 4, 1911, in Buena Vista, Virginia to A.C. Hopkins, a Presbyterian minister, and Ethel Hopkins. She earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, and a Master’s degree in English from Duke University. She taught English at Sweet Briar College in Amherst, Virginia. In 1947 she married Quincy C. Ayres, a professor of engineering at Iowa State University and moved to Ames, Iowa. The couple had two children, and Mrs. Ayres was involved in church and volunteer work in the community.

After Mr. Ayres’ passing in 1963, she returned to college at Iowa State at age 52 where she earned a certificate in rehabilitation counseling. The family then moved to Staunton, Virginia in 1969, where she served as a counselor at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, until her retirement.

She led an active retirement in Staunton, volunteering in church and charitable endeavors. She learned to snorkel at age 80 in Hawaii, traveled extensively in her 80s, and went on an African safari at age 91. She delivered meals-on-wheels to the elderly in her community until she was 92 years old.

Mrs. Ayres is survived by a daughter, Marsha Ayres of Palmyra, VA, a son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Whit, Rebecca, and Catherine Ayres of McLean, VA, a step-daughter, Sally Shroyer of Bethesda, MD, with whom she maintained a remarkably close and affectionate relationship for more than half a century, Sally's husband Lou, their two sons Lou and Andy, and their four grandchildren Natalie, Matt, Justin, and Tom.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 3:00 P.M., with the Rev. Dr. Richard S. Dietrich officiating. She will be interred, along side her husband, in Ames, Iowa, at a later date.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 100 East Frederick Street, Staunton, VA, 24401, or the Child Fund (formerly Christian Children's Fund) 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA, 23294.

Arrangements entrusted to the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 18 West Frederick Street.
